The Supplication of Musa (as)

The Quran contains many amazing duas (supplications).

With something a believer should say, such as the dua for getting into a riding vehicle or supplications that Prophets have made, which are mentioned in the Quran. Prophets are tested in the hardest ways. Many supplications in the Quran are duas for Allah’s help, and they are the best of the best ways to ask Allah. Of course, knowing what they mean ensures we’re sincere in our requests.

Many of these duas are referred to as “Rabbana” duas because they start with the Arabic word رَبَّنَا; Rabbana means “Our Lord.” They are made up of supplications asking for success, protection, victory, forgiveness, etc. They include “40 Rabbana Duas,” and we are encouraged to recite and memorize them.

Prophet Musa’s Mission

The Quran mentions a powerful and profound supplication by Prophet Musa (as). The legacy of his Prophethood is discussed extensively in the Quran. Musa (as) is the most frequently mentioned Prophet in the Quran.

The Quran mentions Musa 136 times by name in the Quran!

Prophet Musa (as) had a challenging task. Allah commanded him to go to the Pharoah. His job was to deliver the message of Allah. This meant he had to go to the most powerful and tyrannical man on earth then. He had a palace that was not only heavily guarded, but Musa (as) was wanted for murder. This mission seemed impossible. But of course, Allah is in Control.

Dua for Help

Though Musa was a Prophet, we must remember that he was very much human.

He understood what he had to do, knowing the potential obstacles. He could have asked for anything, such as manpower or money. But he understood that victory is with Allah, so his issue wasn’t to try to strategize. His concern was to have the capacity to fulfill his duty. In response to this mission, he made this powerful supplication.

 رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِي يَفْقَهُوا قَوْلِي

Rabbishrah Li Sadri Wa Yassir Li Amri Wahlul Uqdatan Min Lisani Yafqahu Qawli

Oh, my Lord! Open for me my chest (grant me self-confidence, contentment, and boldness). And ease my task for me. And make loose the knot (the defect) from my tongue. That they understand my speech. (Quran 20:25-28)

Musa (as) asked for both the mental and physical ability to complete his task. He understood that Allah’s Will would prevail, and his concern was that he made his best effort without error.

Opening the Chest

To understand the power of this dua, you must know what “open for me my chest” means. This phrase means give me ease. Or internal contentment. You’re not sad, depressed, stressed, afraid, overwhelmed, hopeless, etc.

You are calm.

When your chest is open, you have complete faith in the help of Allah. You do not doubt that you will be overcome because you trust Allah. You have good thoughts of Allah and a positive outlook.

When a person’s chest is open, they do not feel uneasy or anxious, and the people around them also feel calm.
