A highlight of a student’s joyful journey to learn Quran
What were you doing at 8 years old? Maybe jumping rope, making art with sidewalk chalk or racing bikes with friends. Not many can say they were teaching Quran! But one student at IQRA, Sumayyah Nawwaz, has those bragging rights.
Sumayyah joined IQRA Network, like many of you, a short three years ago with only a basic recognition of the Arabic alphabet and memorization of Surah Al-Fatiha. But from her first class, she vowed to put in the effort and learn tajweed and recite the best she could. She was committed and didn’t miss her classes.
With her teacher, Najla Altayyeb, she worked hard to pronounce letters correctly. Although she could recognize them, she realized she was not taught the proper way to say them. Instead of getting frustrated, she repeated the sounds after her teacher, over and over. After class, she spent time practicing on her own. Next, her teacher focused on having Sumayyah join the letters.
Fast forward to three years later, she is now reciting Quran and implementing high-level rules of tajweed. But, Sumayyah didn’t stop there.
Commitment to Quran
With the support of her parents, she wanted to use the good she knew and teach it to others. So, what did she do? 8-year-old Sumayyah created her own YouTube channel! The name of her channel is “Let’s Learn Quran Together – Sumayyah Nawaz.”
Learn Quran with Sumayyah
Though Sumayyah’s YouTube channel is new, she already has over 100 subscribers. So far, she has posted only two videos, but with a total reach of 800 views, MashaAllah! At the beginning of each video, she explains that her goal is to recite a portion of the Quran and include one rule of tajweed.
Although starting a YouTube Channel isn’t necessary for us to implement what we’ve learned, it does inspire us to take our lessons and passion and see how we can help others. Maybe you know kids in your community who can’t afford lessons but would benefit from your time teaching them. Or writing a basic Arabic alphabet book or just signing up to take lessons and better your recitation.
Sumayyah’s story is an inspiration for us all and a call to action. If an 8-year-old can teach others the Quran, we can surely take a few minutes each day to read.
We’re so proud of her and her dedication to learning the Quran and teaching it!
Narrated `Uthman bin `Affan:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5028)
