Why Was Surah Duha Revealed?

Understanding the circumstances of revelation makes Surah Duha especially meaningful.

According to a narration from Jundub ibn Sufyan recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ became ill and did not stand for his usual night prayer for two or three nights.

A woman then mocked him, suggesting that he had been abandoned.

Allah revealed the opening verses of Surah Ad-Duha, including the reassurance that his Lord had neither forsaken him nor hated him.

The Surah answered those hurtful claims with words of reassurance.

You can read the narration in Sahih al-Bukhari 4950.

Surah Duha Tafsir: Understanding Its Message

Verses 1–3: Allah Had Not Abandoned His Messenger

The Surah opens by mentioning the brightness of morning and the stillness of night.

Then comes its central reassurance: Allah had not abandoned His Messenger.

The words were addressed specifically to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

For Muslims reflecting on the Surah today, they offer a reminder not to assume that hardship, delay, or uncertainty means Allah is displeased with them.

Verses 4–5: Hope Beyond the Present Moment

The Surah reminds the Prophet ﷺ that the Hereafter is better than this worldly life.

It also promises him Allah’s generosity.

This shifts our attention beyond immediate circumstances.

Not every difficulty disappears quickly, and not every dua is answered in the way we expect. But the Quran teaches believers to look beyond temporary worldly outcomes.

Verses 6–8: Remember How Allah Has Cared for You

The Surah then recalls important blessings in the Prophet’s life.

He was an orphan, and Allah provided him with shelter.

Allah guided him through revelation and provided for his needs.

These verses invite reflection on Allah’s care.

When life feels uncertain, remembering previous blessings can help us practice gratitude without denying the difficulty of our present circumstances.

Verses 9–11: Turn Gratitude Into Kindness

The final verses move from reassurance to responsibility.

Do not mistreat the orphan.

Do not harshly turn away the person who asks.

Speak of your Lord’s blessings.

The message is powerful: remembering Allah’s kindness should influence how we treat others.

Gratitude is not only something we feel. It can become compassion, generosity, and care.
