Why Read More Quran in Ramadan?

It’s not a secret that the entire Muslim Ummah sets out to increase their Quran recitation during Ramadan. Some only read Quran during Ramadan, and that’s a great start! The goal is to make it a point to single out this month for reading, reflecting, and learning the Quran.
Understanding why Ramadan Quran reading is important can help us commit to doing it with enthusiasm for the entire month.
Here are five reasons why to emphasize Quran during Ramadan.
1. The Quran Was First Revealed in Ramadan
We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night (in Ramadan). Verily, We are ever warning. Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainment—Amran (i.e., a command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”
Did you know The Quran itself has been revealed two times?
Once in the Divine Decree (Lawh al Mahfouz), and the second time throughout 23 years to the Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him), when the Quran was first revealed and scribed into the Lawh al Mahfouz, it was during Ramadan. Ramadan is a month Allah singled out and chose for Quran. Thus, we emphasize the connection between the recitation of the Quran and Ramadan.
2. Your Ramadan Quran Rewards Are Multiplied
Abu Huraira (RA) reports Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving tenfold to seven hundredfold rewards. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: Except for fasting, for it is done for Me, and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. Sahih Muslim 1151e
While all rewards multiply in the blessed month of Ramadan, your Ramadan Quran reading is too! Not only are you in a continuous state of worship while fasting, thus earning rewards. But you’re also in the state of remembrance of Allah while reciting the Quran.
Some struggle to recite Quran, and because of that, they push it away from their lives. While learning to read Quran takes time, the more you practice, the easier it gets. Be consoled knowing that the rewards for a person that struggles reading Quran multiply. So, imagine a month with multiplied rewards, then doing a deed that offers similar!
Whether you find it difficult or not, simply engaging in this worship will make you successful, InshaAllah. The following hadith reminds us of this:
‘Aishah (RA) reports: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
3. The Prophet (peace be upon him) Read it Every Year
Abu-Huraira (RA) narrates: Angel Jibril used to repeat the recitation of the Qur’an with the Prophet (peace be upon him) once a year, but he repeated it twice with him in the year he died. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to stay in I’tikaf for ten days every year (in the month of Ramadan), but in the year of his death, he stayed in I’tikaf for twenty days. Sahih al-Bukhari 4998
Every Ramadan, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would read the Quran to Angel Jibril. During the last Ramadan of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he read the Quran twice to Angel Jibril. Again, another indication is that increasing your Ramadan Quran reading is righteous as it is found in the Sunnah (way of the Prophet – peace be upon him).
4. Tarawih Legislated in Ramadan
Abu Hurairah (RA) reports: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “He who observes optional prayer (Tarawih prayers) throughout Ramadan, out of the sincerity of Faith and in the hope of earning reward will have his past sins pardoned.” (Al- Bukhari and Muslim)
Tarawih is an optional prayer explicitly performed during the month of Ramadan. The Imam aims to complete the Quran’s recitation in salat in this blessed month. Tarawih is not performed at any other time during the year except during Ramadan. Hence, we are encouraged to increase our worship and the recitation of the Quran during Ramadan.
5. Reciting the Entire Quran in Ramadan is from the Sunnah
As mentioned earlier, the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited the entire Quran to Angel Jibril every Ramadan. Increasing your Ramadan Quran reading aims to fulfill this Sunnah of intending to recite the whole Quran in Ramadan. Even if you do not reach that goal, you have increased the amount of Quran you typically read. This not only offers you multiple rewards in your worship but also rewards for fulfilling a sunnah. How beautiful is that?
The Quran is a miracle; within it is everything we need to succeed. It has every answer to every problem and is our source of relief. Quran is the Word of Allah, therefore, encompasses greatness. Making it part of our lives is essential to increasing the blessings in our lives.
Whether your Ramadan Quran reading is a struggle or is easy. Whether it’s something you aren’t used to doing or you are blessed to read the entire Quran multiple times.
